A New Spa Director’s Enlightened Approach to Treatments
Breathtakingly beautiful, calm, and customized to meet the needs of every guest, the Remède Spa at The St. Regis Deer Valley is one of the world’s most luxurious mountain resorts. Fortunately, the spa has been able to maintain a strong level of business throughout the past year. The New Spa Director Benjamin Donat attributes much of this success to the reduced amount of social contact in spa offerings and eschewing profits to take the ultimate approach in safety and cleanliness precautions.
In addition to these changes, Donat has reworked the retail component of the Spa to emphasize luxury products and has attracted many residents by offering specials and promotions that appeal to local Utahans. Separate from these initiatives, the Spa stands as a stunning 14,000 square foot space that provides top-notch services and remarkable experiences for its guests.
A Look Inside
The two-level spa provides an intimate, serene sanctuary with pampering services and breathtaking mountain surroundings. The Spa was inspired by the spectacular views of the Wasatch Mountains. Freshwater from an outdoor waterfall stream inside, forming a river that runs through the center of the spa and cascades into a glistening pool. The Spa features a grand spiral staircase that ascends to eleven elegant treatment rooms, including two private companion suites that open to a spacious patio with a cascading waterfall.
The Remède Spa’s most popular treatment is the Hot Poultice Massage (80 min, $330). “The masseuse gently and strategically applies the poultice to the client. The Hot Poultice Massage combines herbs wrapped in a cloth with an oil customized per client. The cloth and oil are then steamed and used in the massage to relieve fatigued and tense muscles. The heat of the poultice relieves soreness and rebalances and relaxes the body,” says Donat. Other sought-after treatments include many of the Couple Massages, Biologique Recherche Facials, and Customized Massages. The Spa’s therapists are expertly versed in each of the world’s renowned methods to deliver treatments with remarkable results. Treatments include Deep Tissue, Swedish, Reflexology, Hot Poultice, and Prenatal.
In addition to following CDC and WHO protocols, St. Regis Deer Valley raises its standards to a higher level of safety by being Sharecare Health Security VERIFIED™ with Forbes Travel Guide. “This comprehensive verification covers more than 360 standards across health and hygiene protocols, cleaning products and procedures, ventilation, physical distancing, the guest experience, and health safety communication with guests and employees,” says Donat.
There are many measures put into place to ensure that guests are safe. The Spa has reduced the amount of social contact by requiring that treatments be booked in advance and has built-in additional time after each treatment so that staff can perform a thorough cleaning and sanitizing procedures. Upon arrival at the Spa, every guest is given a locker that contains a sanitized robe, towel, and bathmat, as well as single-serve snacks handled by a gloved and masked staff member.
“In non-pandemic times, we would keep the cleaning out of sight of our guest. However, it is important for our guests to see that cleaning is being done all the time, which instills confidence in our clients- they know that all surfaces are clean and sanitized. Extensive cleaning takes place in the Spa throughout the day,” says Donat.
Spa Director Benjamin Domat believes that The St. Regis Deer Valley enjoys a strong level of repeat guests due to its state-of-the-art facilities, including the Remède Spa and its unmatched service. “Once a guest from the hotel or The St. Regis Deer Valley Residences or a local member of the community experiences a treatment, much of our business is word-of-mouth,” explains Donat. Most guests ask for the same or similar service with the same personnel upon their return.
Furthermore, the four-season Resort tailors its offerings and promotions to reflect the various activities of the season. Both international and domestic clientele can experience first-class skiing in the winter, and hiking, mountain biking, and running in the spring, summer, and fall. Most of these offerings are publicized frequently in international and domestic-level media coverage, social media, and local publications.
“The Remède Spa and the entire hotel enjoys a wonderful relationship with international and domestic members of the media. We are big believers in the powers of public relations and marketing,” says Donat. Additionally, the Spa’s website is also very active with nearly 50 percent of guests’ bookings being made through the website.
Special Events and Promotion
The Remède Spa strongly believes in promotions throughout the year, with an emphasis on the off-season – Spring, Summer, and Fall. The Spa alternates between discounted services and/or enhancements. Donat says, “During a recent promotion, every massage included a complimentary Moroccan Oil Scalp Enhancement and every 80-minute Biologique Recherche Customized Facial came with a VIP Gift Box filled with four Biologique Recherche products.” The Spa also targets special events such as Valentine’s Day by making a dedicated “Romance Month” in February. During this time, guests can receive a complimentary Eye Revive Treatment and a box of chocolate truffles with their Couples Massage.
Revenue and Retail
“I am always seeking products that communicate what is important in our spa: luxury, relaxation, and a unique and memorable experience in a breathtakingly beautiful setting,” explains Donat. The lines that the Spa carries are Natura Bisse, Biologique Recherche, DermYoung, ESPA, RAD, LEEF, Spongelle, Therabody, Moroccanoil, Knesko, PureInventions, EuropeanSpaSource, Kashwere, Aluminate Life, and Mickey Lynn Jewelry. Guests receive retail discounts after booking a treatment. Those who are a part of a group, such as a wedding or corporate meeting, often receive discounts as well.
