Spa of the Month

Kári Skin

Tucked away in a cozy corner of Philadelphia’s Old City you will find Kári Skin, a warm and welcoming med spa that transcends the typical experience by merging luxury and wellness with clinical aesthetics. Each client’s facial experience is based on their skin’s unique needs. Expertly trained award-winning estheticians customize each facial treatment, and each spa service begins with the signature Kári Skin triple cleanse.

“We have an amazingly gifted team and a genuinely supportive work environment. We value our staff and our clients, which makes for a truly unique experience,” says owner Tirzah Blair. This small but mighty space features four treatment rooms, and aims to envoke a feeling that is both inviting and empowering.

Kári Skin opened in December 2019, and in just over three years – which included a global pandemic –  it has obtained a prestigious BEST of PHILLY: Best Facial award, with the entire staff collecting many individual awards for massage, brow shaping, and Brazilian wax services, to name a few. Keep reading to see why this is just the beginning for Kári Skin.

Signature Treatments

The most popular aesthetic menu treatments are the manual lift facial, using the HP method of aesthetic intra-oral buccal massage, and the signature 24 karat golden hour facial, a trade secret facial not done anywhere else in the world. The 60-90 minute fully customizable facial, which includes enzymes, acids, oxygen, microcurrent, and more, is also a popular pick.

Fan favorite luxury medical services include the Tone, Texture and Brighten package which utilizes a medical esthetician’s light-based and chemical peel skillset. Micro-infusion with the hydra needle can include PRP and/or Botox or filler. Microneedling is available with PRP, HA, or chemical peel solutions. Women’s hair restoration services have been described as “life changing,” and the brow lift and lip flip are also bestsellers.

Marketing

Most of Kári’s business is word of mouth, with the overall experience and results keeping people coming back for more. “If I had to list a few things, asking clients to schedule their next appointment before they leave is one of the best things our administrative team can do to ensure retention,” notes Blair. “We also offer referral program, “tag us for $25” for Instagram mentions, as well as a $50 birthday gift card, and we hold events quarterly to offer new and exciting services or membership specials, which keep the consumers engaged.”

Kári Skin uses both email and social media to maximize outreach, with a small budget for things like Instagram ads, advertising, and SEO. By hosting local and national influencers to experience the offerings and speak from the heart in a reel or post, they often become regulars. Working with local magazines and offering continued support for content on new trends is also helpful. Of course, maintaining impeccable customer relations is a must.

Training

What makes Kári an innovator in the industry is first and foremost, experience. Blair also serves as lead trainer at Kári and has more than 24 years’ experience. She has worked with some of Philadelphia’s “Top Doctors” and trained under highly skilled aestheticians from around the world. Kári supports continued education and schedules quarterly trainings with some of the most prestigious trainers in the industry.

One-on-one meetings are held every six months, which gives each team member a private opportunity to talk about their goals or kindly express concerns. New policies and short-term and long-term goals are also discussed, generating a list of ideas and allowing the team to feel connected to the decision making of the practice.

“I always suggest that team members make time to try our services and products so they can promote from the heart, and typically the rest will follow organically,” shares Blair. “We offer complimentary services, paid education, and competitive commission and salary rates. Most importantly, we offer a safe and nurturing work environment which naturally improves employee longevity.”

Revenue and Retail

“I began my research into product lines more than 15 years ago. Whenever I would travel, I would take research notes and list pros and cons of products, then stash in a folder. I would just keep adding research into it and revisit my favorite lines to see how they stood up to the test of time. I now have four of those lines in my spa today,” details Blair. “We use Luzern, Amala, Honua, Twelve Beauty, Blissoma, Joint Joint, PCA, Osmia and more! We only sell what the client needs; we don’t push product. We engage trust first, then design a skincare plan and set goals for clients to slowly build their homecare regimen.”

While Kári’s transformative treatments are something of a well-kept secret, clients are understandably 90 percent local and 10 percent travelers. Skincare makes up the vast majority of business, with bodywork bringing in about five percent of revenue.
