Glow Over Time

Designing Strategic Treatment Series That Deliver

By Lola Living

Exfoliation is more than a single step in a facial, it’s a strategy. When used wisely over time, exfoliation can transform skin texture, clarity, and tone. But the timing and sequencing of exfoliation treatments is what separates short-term glow from long-term results.

When mapped with intention, an exfoliation series becomes a journey—a collaboration between esthetician and client that builds trust, delivers results, and honors the skin’s evolving needs.

A successful exfoliation series begins with intention. Are you working to clear acne? Brighten pigmentation? Soften wrinkles or texture? Each goal requires a different pace and type of exfoliation. Instead of jumping into aggressive treatments, estheticians should begin with a “prep phase” to build the skin’s tolerance. This phase might include enzymes, light lactic acid peels, or microdermabrasion combined with hydration. The goal here is to strengthen the barrier and gently stimulate cellular renewal.

Once the skin is prepped and responsive, the active phase begins. This is when you may introduce stronger acids—like glycolic, salicylic, or blended peels—depending on the client’s goals and skin response. The frequency of these treatments should be determined by skin type, sensitivity, and lifestyle. For example, a client who is outdoors often may need more spacing between treatments to avoid sun sensitivity and overexposure.

Throughout the series, progress should be monitored carefully. Just because the skin tolerates an exfoliant doesn’t mean it needs more of it. Inflammation, dehydration, and dullness can all be signs that the skin is over-treated. If so, a reset period with calming treatments may be required.

The final phase is maintenance. Once the primary goal is achieved, clients may only need monthly exfoliation with hydrating and antioxidant support. This is a critical time to reinforce skin education, especially around SPF, at-home actives, and barrier care.

Timing within the session also matters. Some acids should be neutralized within a specific time frame, while others are self-neutralizing. Modalities like LED light or oxygen infusion can be timed after exfoliation to support healing and enhance results.

When mapped with intention, an exfoliation series becomes a journey, a collaboration between esthetician and client that builds trust, delivers results, and honors the skin’s evolving needs.
