Spa Grande at Grand Wailea Maui Resort

The Grand Wailea Maui, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, is an oceanfront oasis where you can enjoy island life to the fullest. Just steps away from the breathtakingly beautiful Wailea Beach, the massive 40-acre resort is a destination itself. The luxurious resort contains 780 upscale rooms, including several suite options boasting spectacular ocean views, two enormous pools, a modern fitness center, wedding chapel, four restaurants, two bars, a family game room, and yes, you guessed it- the largest spa in Hawaii at 50,000 sqft. The amenity-packed resort represents the true essence of Hawaii, inviting guests to experience the aloha state of mind through hiking adventures, water excursions, and cultural immersions. The exclusive spa offers an extensive menu of pampering experiences to delight the senses and soothe the mind, body, and spirit.

The Healing Waters of Maui

Soak head to toe in luxury and aromatic bliss through the Healing Water of Maui, a mind, body, and spiritual journey created exclusively for Spa Grande. The experience consists of five specialty baths containing the island’s most precious water and a unique selection of essential oils blended with Hawaiin plants, minerals, and botanicals from local farms to ignite the senses and invigorate the body. Guests can submerge themselves in the healing properties of the water, or feel the water in motion through the termé hydrotherapy circuit, “a series of thermal baths, showers, and one-of-a-kind features designed to soothe and rejuvenate,” says Spa Director Rachael McCrory.

Each guest is invited to spend an hour prior to their spa treatment enjoying the benefits of the termé. The Roman area features a luxurious whirlpool with a cold plunge, a detoxifying dry Redwood Sauna, and a soothing eucalyptus steam room. For the best of both worlds, guests can enjoy hot and cold plunges in traditional Furo baths located in the Japanese area. For muscle relief and deep relaxation, the Maui area features three cascading waterfalls dropping from a height of 10 feet for the ultimate upper body massage. Guests can also reap the therapeutic benefits of two tropical showers with 50 invigorating water jets that massage the entire body.

Signature Treatments

Ho’Omalie is a healing treatment inspired by native traditions. Rhythmic lomilomi (traditional Hawaiin-style massage) and pohaku (warm stone massage) are blended to release tension and induce deep relaxation. An infusion of mango and cocoa butter, vitamin E, turmeric, and island essences are melted on the skin, leaving it soft and nourished. A purifying volcanic pumice foot scrub and hydrating coconut scalp massage top off this serene experience emulating the indulges of Ali’i (royalty). For a traditional lomilomi massage, full-body cocoon, scalp massage, and foot massage, guests can treat themselves to the Pala’au Journey. Guests can also experience the delight of honey bee sweetness through the Honey Macadamia Nut Indulgence. This luxurious treatment uses a bee propolis mask

to boost immunity and soften the skin and a whipped honey and macadamia nut oil massage to unravel muscle tension and calm the mind. The healing powers of honey helps calm upset skin while adding a healthy glow. Each signature treatment is 110 minutes and priced at $385.

Marketing

The Grand Wailea Maui Instagram page has followers dreaming about Maui. Many visitors are attracted to the luxurious spa treatments showcased on social media, print advertising, and digital marketing. “Spa Grande sees a larger number of repeat guests, both from residents and guests of the hotel that return year after year. In terms of attracting new clients, we do our best to ensure we’re featured in high-quality editorial publication by inviting select media to experience our spa for themselves,” says McCrory.

Spa Grande has a strong reputation in Maui for its iconic treatments and has received Top Spa in The Best of Maui every year. The destination spa has also gained tremendous traction through prominent publications like Condé Nast Traveler and Travel & Leisure magazine. Spa Grande is also a proud recipient of the 2019 Forbes Four-Star Award.

Training

Beauty blooms brighter at the spectacular resort spa thanks to the incredible staff and the #TrueWaldorfService touch as advertised on social media. To upkeep staff performance, the spa holds periodical meetings before every shift and throughout the year. “We have three pre-shift meetings per day to provide the team with an overview of happenings and discuss daily goals. Beyond this, we have four mandatory meetings per year. Two of these meetings are goal-specific – we set our three goals for the year and create an action plan to support. We then review our performance and reassess halfway through the year,” explains McCrory. Individual staff performance and career goals are reviewed two times per year. In addition to these efforts, the Spa Grande is also committed to obtaining their Forbes Five-Star title by holding sponsored Forbes training sessions.

Special Events and Promotions

Spa Grande invites guests to commit to prioritizing well-being through The Spa Club membership. This allows for repeat clientele to reserve exclusive treatments at an exceptional value monthly. Members of the club are granted access to all of the amenities on the day of their treatment. As for special events, the resort spa is currently re-energizing their Social by Spa Grande program. “This is a fun, social wellness program involving outdoor spin and barre with a cocktail to follow. It is an event heavily attended by the local community,” explains McCrory.

Revenue and Retail

As a commitment to the ‘aina (land), Spa Grande sources 90 percent of their professional massage and body treatment products from Hawaii. “I am passionate about retail and providing our guests with unique lifestyle brands. I first look for companies based in Hawaii. We have an incredible platform to showcase local [brands],” says McCrory.

Some of the spa’s partners include Ola Tropical Apothecary, Malie, Ala Lani, Oshan, and O’o Hawaii used in the spa’s very popular Hawaii Superfood Crystal Facial treatment. “Beyond this, we also feature local vendors in our stores, including apparel and jewelry.”

Most of the spa’s revenue comes from massage and bodywork (80 percent), while 10 percent comes from skincare and 5 percent from retail. Guests are encouraged to purchase a recommended product after experiencing the enjoyment of their treatment through a 10 percent discount.
