Healthy Skin Starts from Within
Life in the 21st century and all that comes with it, from stress and pollution to our not-so-clean diet, can impact our skin. What we eat has the power to align our mind, body, spirit, and skin to optimize health in ways that can not only be seen but felt. By incorporating more superfoods into our diets we can regulate gut bacteria, improve digestion, strengthen our immune system, increase energy, minimize stress, and optimize skin health. Our nutrition plays a big part in achieving complete skin and body confidence, as it gives us the ability to adapt to our fast paced lifestyles.
Food is medicine, and what we put into our bodies has the power to aid inner healing and enhance overall wellness. That’s why I’m a big believer in incorporating superfoods and adaptogens into my diet. Here are five of my favorites, along with some easy ways to add them to your daily routine!

Goji berries are native to China and resemble tiny red raisins when dried. Rich in antioxidants, this superfruit is rich in antioxidants, packed with Vitamin C, and has all nine essential amino acids. You can eat them like raisins or add the powdered version to your smoothies to support eye health, boost your immune system, increase energy, and promote overall beauty and vitality.
Moringa is an Ayurvedic herb and adaptogen native to Africa and the Himalayas. The leaves are nutrient dense and are mainly consumed in powder form. Rich in protein, antioxidants, iron, and Vitamins A, B and C, studies have found that it’s helpful in lowering cholesterol, addressing inflammation, promoting healthy digestion, and controlling blood sugar levels. The presence of tryptophan, an amino acid found in the body that regulates serotonin production, may also help to stabilize mood, making it a superfood that is great for keeping mind, body, and spirit in balance. I love to sip it in warm water with a little lemon and honey!
Turmeric is a root native to southern India and Indonesia that contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties from the constituent curcumin. Turmeric can aid in reducing gut inflammation, promoting healthy digestion, and can even help to address skin issues and acne as a facial mask. It can easily be incorporated into curries, baked goods, and plant-based milk lattes and teas.
Chlorella is a freshwater algae found worldwide that boasts a plethora of benefits for mind, body, and skin. As an esthetician, I have a particular affinity for its detoxifying properties. Not only can chlorella boost immunity and brain power, but it’s known to lower blood pressure and blood sugar while fighting oxidative stress (a contributor to aging). It’s rich in fiber, iron, and prebiotics — essential for a healthy gut-to-skin connection (something else I have an affinity for). Chlorella has also been revered for its ability to protect the eyes from the harmful effects of blue light, improve cholesterol, and decrease the severity of menstrual cramps. You can take it in a capsule daily or add its powdered form to virtually any food.
Cacao is found in many places across the globe, though 70% of it is produced in Africa. Packed with antioxidants, it is an anti-aging superstar known for activating protective cell mechanisms. Cacao shields the skin from UV damage and reduces skin redness by increasing circulation, bringing nutrients to the blood and oxygen. Cacao also increases serotonin levels in the brain and reduces stress, thanks to its high levels of magnesium, which calm the nervous system and regulates heart rate. You can use cacao in place of cocoa powder in recipes — it’s especially delicious in raw desserts.
